Gunung Leuser: a Sumatran park bound by competing interests

A local man rural Aceh, Sumatra, sets off on the return journey to his home.

Banana, coffee and chocolate throng the eastern slope of Gunung Leuser National Park. After a long day of work, local villagers often bathe in the river that divides their homes from the plantations.

The park is also home to the Sumatran tiger, white rhino, mountain elephants and the moon bear. The southern expansion of plantations from Aceh has raised tensions among conservationists, guides and local farmers.
